Itemize charity donations

i thought there was no need to itemize charitable donations for 2018 since the standard credit is so large

You do not need to itemize your deductions if you are taking the Standard Deduction instead.  TurboTax asks you about your deductions in case you want to itemize your deductions on your state return.  If you do not wish to continue with the deductions interview, you can click on "Deductions & Credits" scroll down to "Wrap up tax breaks", and scroll through the next few screens until you reach "The Standard Deduction is Right for You!" screen.  If you do decide you'd rather itemize your deductions, at that point you can check the box "Change my deduction".
