According to the instructions on the Maine website, you can take a deduction on your Maine tax return, for most of the itemized deductions that you take on the federal return, and this would include the personal property tax that you paid for your vehicles. However, the Maine instructions say that if you take the standard deduction on your federal return, that you have to take the standard deduction on your state return. If you itemize your deductions on the federal return, then you have the choice to either itemize your deductions or take the standard deduction on your Maine return, based on whichever method will provide the best benefit for you. Please refer to page 4 and page 19 of the website instructions for more information. http://www.maine.gov/revenue/forms/1040/2016/16_1040me_book_download.pdf. Additionally, please refer to the following FAQ to learn more about itemized deductions on your federal return. https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3302313
