IRS Technical Advice Memorandum TR 32-153-91

Hello,

I need to amend my return from 2020. I received a letter showing that the information from my W-2 was changed (due to a reclassification to an injury, it is now classified as being at work). I followed the information shown in I need to enter a negative amount om line 21 to deduct workman compensation wages that were included... but after moving on it does not show any money owed to me. I'm not sure if these steps are correct or if there is something else that needs to be done. Does anybody know what to do?

Thanks!

The steps are appropriate in that you are entering a negative (1) amount as "Other Reportable Income".  The result is a negative (-) entry on Line 8Z of your Schedule 1 which totals and carries to line 8 on your form 1040.

There may not be a change in your refund if you have already been refunded all of your withholding and refundable credits on the original return.

Compare a print of your original return to the amended return.  Pay attention to line 8 and what happens on lines 16-33.  If your total tax was zero on line 24 on your original return then all of your withholding and refundable credits (lines 25-33) have already been refunded.

If that is the case you do not need to file the amendment.
