Say you contributed $1000 pretax dollars to your HSA, but your medical expenses that year were $4000. You drained that $1000 and then paid the other $3000 out of pocket. Is there a way to enter that $3000 so that it gives you the tax credit back as if that had been pretax dollars? Kind of like, pretending you had put in the full $4000 in from the beginning? If not, I assume that reimbursing yourself is the only option to get the pretax benefit.

The only way to get the pre-tax benefit is to deposit the money into your HSA.
You can make contributions to your HSA for 2016 through April 18, 2017.
