If you report all of your itemized deductions TurboTax will choose the higher of the standard or itemized deduction for both state and federal.
choose what to report, that is?
in other words if the itemizations add up to less than the standard deduction, than *none* of the itemizations will be included in the filed data correct?
No, if you are claiming the standard deduction on your Federal return, then the information entered for itemized deductions is not included as part of your Federal tax return.
However, some states do allow you to claim itemized deductions on the state return even if the standard deduction is used for the Federal return. So, depending on your state and your tax situation, some of the itemized deduction information may be included as part of your state return if itemizing is the better option.
If the standard deduction is best for you, the itemized deduction information is retained in the TurboTax account but not reported on your Federal tax return.
There are instances where this information is used on state tax returns when certain states permit those deductions on the state income tax return.
