If I replaced my roof in 2016 but paid for it in 2017 which year do I get to deduct the sales tax, the year I paid for roof or the year it was replaced?

This relates to the sales tax deduction for my personal residence NOT a rental expense.

You can take the deduction in 2017 because that is the year you paid the expense.
