That is a great thing you are doing.  Unfortunately if you are a W-2 wage employee you cannot deduct on a federal tax return any employee business expenses due to the tax code changes in effect for the tax years 2018 thru 2025.

So if I was not employed by the PD, would that donation be deductible??

No. The police department is a government organization rather than a charity.

 

Charitable contributions to qualified organizations may be deductible if you itemize deductions on Schedule A (Form 1040), Itemized Deductions. To see if the organization you have contributed to qualifies as a charitable organization for income tax deductions, use Tax Exempt Organization Search.
