it depends on whether you can itemize deductions. The standard deduction is shown below for your convenience.

Use the steps below to enter your noncash donations.  Keep in mind that if your noncash donations are more than $500, you will need to complete Form 8283, Section A.

If you claim a deduction of more than $5,000 per item (or a group of similar items), you must obtain a qualified appraisal of the item or group of items and fill out Form 8283, Section B.

TurboTax will guide you. The instructions are for TurboTax Online.  The link will also provide instructions for TurboTax Desktop which are very similar.

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Use the Jump to link to go directly to the Donations to Charity section in TurboTax.
  3. Select the Yes button to answer the question: Did you make any donations to charity in 2023?
  4. If you have an account with ItsDeductible, select Yes to begin the process of importing your donation information;
  5. If you select No, continue to the next step.
  6. On the Donations screen, answer Yes to the question: Do you want to enter your donations for 2023?
  7. Fill out your donations on the, Let’s enter your donations one at a time screen .
  8. Once all your donations have been entered, select the button for Done on the Review All Your Charities screen.

If you already have a cash donation entered, the screen below will show you how to select 'Add another charity'.

If your itemized deductions are greater than the standard deduction then you should use those.  The expenses most commonly associated with itemized deductions is medical expenses greater than 7.5% of your income, property taxes, state and local income tax or sale tax, mortgage interest and donations.

For single taxpayers and married individuals filing separately, the Standard Deduction is $13,850 in 2023.

For married couples filing jointly is $27,700, and

For heads of households, the Standard Deduction is $20,800

If you're at least 65 years old or blind, you can claim an additional deduction in 2023 of:

  • $1,850 for single or Head of Household
  • $1,500 for married or Qualified Surviving Spouse.

If you're both 65 and blind, the additional deduction amount is doubled.

If you have additional questions please add here with details and we can help.

NOTE: This cannot be used if it was deducted previously as a business expense on your rental or self employment activity.
