HVAC Leak

Had HVAC leak in attic. Water damage to bathroom and laundry room ceiling, walls and floors. Insurance company denied the claim.  Cost to repair damage was $20,000. Is this a deductible loss?

HVAC Leak

This is not deductible if it is your personal residence, at least not on your federal tax return.  If you live in a state that does not conform to federal rules for disaster losses, it may be deductible in your state.

For a federal deduction only losses that are attributable to federally declared disasters are able to be deducted.
