HSA and HDHP sections

We do not participate in an HSA. We just have a regular health plan through my husband's employer. In the interview, I say "Yes" we had medical expenses, then on the next screen I check "None" for having an HSA, MSA, or Medicare Advantage, then the next screen I choose "Family" coverage, then the next screen asks why we "had a break in HDHP" coverage. We never had a break & its very confusing. I cannot complete the medical expenses section.

HSA and HDHP sections

From the questions you are seeing, it seems like you may have gotten into the HSA, MSA section in error.  Since you did not have a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), then you should revisit that section and enter 'none' for the type of coverage you had instead of 'family'.  This question is only asking about HDHP coverage with regard to also having a Health Savings Account (HSA).

Then, use the following steps to go to the Medical Expenses section of your return:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax screen, click on Search
  • This opens a box where you can type in “medical expenses, sch a” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here including the comma)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to medical expenses, sch a
  • Click on the blue “Jump to medical expenses, sch a” link
