How do I get my child off someone’s income taxes

You cannot remove a dependent from someone else's tax return.  If someone else claimed your dependent on their tax return and the return was accepted by the IRS, then your only option is to print and mail your tax return, leaving the dependent on the return.  If you are owed a tax refund the IRS will pay you the refund.

Within a year the IRS will send both parties a notice to investigate why the dependent was on two tax return.  The loser of the investigation must pay back any tax refund based on the dependent plus penalties and interest.
