How can I find out if I should have received the Additional Child Tax Credit on my 2023 Tax Return?

I received the Child Tax Credit of $2000 on my 2023 return but the Additional Child Tax Credit was not applied for my 16 yr old son who lived with me full time and I claim on my taxes. Why didn't it get applied on my tax return when I filed with Turbo Tax?

We cannot see your tax return so we do not know why you did not get the ACTC.    Was there anything on line 28 of your Form 1040?   Did you enter income from working in 2023?   The ACTC was based on how much you earned from working.

For 2023  the maximum amount of the child tax credit was $2000 per child; the refundable “additional child tax credit” amount was $1600.   In order to get that credit, you have to have income from working.  The credit is calculated based on the amount you earned above $2500 multiplied by 15%, up to the full $1600 per child. If the amount you earned was too low, you could not get the full $1600.

If your child was older than 16 at the end of 2023, you do not get the CTC or ACTC.  But you may still get the non-refundable $500 credit for other dependents instead.

Look at your 2023 Form 1040 to see the child-related credits you received

Credit for Other Dependents line 19

Earned Income Credit line 27
