High deductible health plan

Why am I getting a message that I had a lapse in my high deductible health plan last year? I am the sole member on the plan and I am not covered on any other plan. I did have to take 2 weeks off last year while waiting for Covid testing results but there was never a lapse in coverage.

The question on the page before you see that you had a “lapse” in coverage is causing the issue.

On the previous page you should see the question, “What type of High Deductible Health Plan did [spouse] have on December 1, 2019?”.  The choices are Family, Self only, or None

If you have been covered under your husband’s family plan, you might think you should answer Family to the question.  However, the answer should be None

It is referring to what type of plan you held in your name on December 1, 2019.  If you had your own separate HDHP on that date, then choose the type of plan that you had.  If instead you were covered under the plan in your husband’s name, then you should choose None.

To go back to the section of your return to answer the questions again, use the following steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)

  • This opens a box where you can type in “hsa” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)

  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to hsa

  • Click on the blue “Jump to hsa” link and edit your information

I have always been the only one on my insurance. There has never been any other insurance I could be on. I am single and always have been. The only correct answer for me on this question would "self", which is why I selected self. Why is it saying coverage had lapsed when it never did?

High deductible health plan

I do not have an HSA and never have. It would be incorrect to claim that I have.

Is there a code W on your W-2 in Box 12? This could be what is triggering your HSA.

Code W in Box 12 of your W2 indicates that you have an employer-sponsored Health Savings Account and that there was money deposited into your HSA through the payroll system at work. Code W opens up Form 8889, Health Savings Accounts, on your tax return.
