Filing information from 1099-SA for HSA

My husband received a 1099-SA form. Box 2 (earnings) was $0.00. Do we need to enter the amount in box1 (gross distribution) somewhere?

Yes, you need to enter the amounts reported on Form 1099-SA into your return.  Then continue through the follow-up questions to verify whether or not the distribution was used for medical expenses.  This will determine whether the distribution is taxable or not.

Use these steps to go to the section of your return to enter the Form 1099-SA:

    • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)

    • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-SA” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)

    • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-SA

    • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-SA” link
