Excess HSA Contribution

I (and my employer) contributed 1950 to my HSA in 2016 while I was covered under a qualified HDHP.  I was covered by this plan for 8 months of the year (which TurboTax has not asked me anywhere).  At one point, TurboTax told me I was paying a penalty for an excess contribution to the HSA, which my calculations indicate is incorrect, but I cannot find any subsequent reference as to whether or not this penalty is being applied in TurboTax, nor anywhere to indicate how many months I was covered under the HDHP for.

To navigate back to the HDHP section to indicate the months you were covered by the HDHP and calculate the maximum HSA contribution limit:

  • In your open return, select My Account
  • Select Tools
  • Select Topic Search
  • Type 'HDHP' in the box, then select GO

You should land on the HSA Summary page, select edit. Continue until reaching the page, Were you enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) in 2016? Select no, then continue to next page to enter the months covered and calculate the Max Contribution Limit.
