I recently purchased a car that qualifies for an EV tax credit. The IRS says that the buyer should receive a certification of eligibility for the credit from either the manufacturer (if domestic manufacturer) or domestic distributor (if foreign manufacturer). From the Instructions for Form 8936: "The manufacturer or domestic distributor should be able to provide you with a copy of the IRS letter acknowledging the certification of the vehicle." I purchased a foreign car.
The dealer seems to have no idea about this certification, even though they must have sold EVs before. Do I need the certification? Is there any information on the certification that I need to fill out Form 8936 that I can't find elsewhere? (I'll of course know the VIN, date of service, etc).
Thanks

On the 8936 you don't need any certificate info ... just the VIN.
