Energy tax credit

My son lives with us. He files his taxes separately. Each of us paid to replace some windows in the home separately. Can each of us claim energy tax credit on our respective tax returns as each of us paid for window replacement, even though the home address would be the same?

Who owns the house?  If your son does not own the house, then he cannot take a credit for replacing the windows.

"Exterior doors, windows and skylights, insulation materials or systems, and air sealing materials or systems: the home must be located in the United States and must be owned and used by the taxpayer as the taxpayer's principal residence" ;Energy Credit For Rental Property

If you son also owns the home, then yes, he is also eligible to claim the credit. You would both say that you owned the home with someone other than your spouse and walk through the steps to claim the credit.  The amount you can claim is limited to the percent of the total cost to what you you personally paid.

Ex.  You paid $1,200 and your son paid $1,000.  You would claim $654.55.

$1,200/ ($1,200+$1,000)=.545

.545x1,200=$654.55
