Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covers doors, windows - TT calculations is/are incorrect

  • Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covers doors, windows Arizona Central Newspaper:

https://www.azcentral.com/story/money/business/consumers/2024/01/22/energy-tax-credits-2023-what-to-...

This credit subsidizes some of the costs for other types of new equipment or items including exterior doors, windows, skylights, insulation material, central air conditioners and water heaters. The IRS also provides details about this credit on its website.

In general, the credit recoups 30% of expenses incurred during the year of installation, from 2023 though 2032, up to an annual maximum of $1,200. Within this category, there's a limit of $250 per door/$500 for multiple doors and $600 for windows. Heat pumps, biomass stoves and boilers have a separate annual credit worth up to $2,000.

Turbo Tax: Did I Get The Full Credit?

There are two types of energy property that you can place into service.
Energy Efficient Home - If you placed property into service like doors, windows, insulation, water heaters, etc.:
Different types of qualified energy efficiency improvements have different credit limits. Together, the total amount of allowable credit is limited to $500.

Using TT  step by step home energy credit approach, TT only calculated the door value and did not include the windows.

IRS: Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, the credit equals 30% of certain qualified expenses, including:

https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/energy-efficient-home-improvement-credit

  • Qualified energy efficiency improvements installed during the year
  • Residential energy property expenses
  • Home energy audits

There are limits on the allowable annual credit and on the amount of credit for certain types of qualified expenses. The credit is allowed for qualifying property placed in service on or after Jan. 1, 2023, and before Jan. 1, 2033.

The maximum credit you can claim each year is:

  • $1,200 for energy property costs and certain energy efficient home improvements, with limits on doors ($250 per door and $500 total), windows ($600) and home energy audits ($150)
  • $2,000 per year for qualified heat pumps, biomass stoves or biomass boilers

The credit has no lifetime dollar limit. You can claim the maximum annual credit every year that you make eligible improvements until 2033.

The credit is nonrefundable, so you can't get back more on the credit than you owe in taxes. You can't apply any excess credit to future tax years.

In 2023 I  paid:

  • $13,078 for 2 sliding glass doors IRS Publication states: $500 max
  • $8,625 for 5 new windows IRS Publication states: $600 max

My 2023 TT Home and Business application for energy credit is only showing $500. My credit should be $1,100
