Do my health insurance deductibles count as medical expenses
Yes, if you paid them. Many out-of-pocket expenses are deductible.
Qualified medical expenses include the cost of diagnosis or treatment to cure, improve or prevent a physical or mental illness or defect. They include costs such as:
- Payments to or payments for services to doctors or dentists
- Hospital fees
- Prescription medications
- Medical equipment and supplies
- Miles driven with your car for medical purposes
Qualified medical expenses do not need to be incurred in the current year. A distribution from an HSA or MSA can be used to pay or reimburse expenses in any prior year as long as the expenses were incurred after the plan was established and the expenses were not previously reimbursed or taken as an itemized deduction.
Qualified medical expenses don't include expenses related to improving general health, including:
- Most insurance premiums
- Vitamins
- Non-prescription drugs
- Cosmetic surgery (some exceptions apply)
