Deductions

I received a settlement due to a personal injury.  I was required to reimburse my health insurance plan expenses paid because of the injury. The Attorney Fees, Fees paid by Attorney for medical history, Expenses reimbursed to my health insurance plan were deducted from my settlement check.  The settlement is not taxable income.

Are Attorney fees, expenses paid for medical history, or medical expenses reimbursed to health insurance plan eligible deductions on my tax return?

Thank you,

Kim Evans

No!  You cannot claim a deduction against nontaxable income.  Since the income is not taxable, there is nothing to match it to and since it is not taxable, expenses to get that income would not be deductible.
