Deduction health insurance premiums I paid while unemployed not thru Marketplace

Can I deduct health insurance premiums that I paid? I'm unemployed, spouse retired in 2022 so we lost employer-paid coverage. Spouse eligible for Medicare, I'm 62, not eligible, so got coverage privately, NOT thru Marketplace because spouse's income prior to retirement put me above income limits for marketplace. Was advised to go directly to Blue Cross as there was no benefit from Marketplace. Without the Marketplace, I did not receive a 1095A for premiums paid

Deduction health insurance premiums I paid while unemployed not thru Marketplace

Premiums paid out of pocket are deductible as a medical expense.

The medical expense deduction has to meet a rather large threshold before it can affect your return. The amount of medical (including dental, vision, etc.)  expenses that will count toward itemization is the amount that is OVER 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. You should only enter the amount you paid in 2022—do not include any amounts covered by insurance or still outstanding.

Of course, your medical expenses plus your other itemized deductions still have to exceed your standard deduction before you see a difference in your tax due or refund.

To enter your medical expenses, go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Medical>Medical Expenses
