Contributed to my 2022 HSA in error. I am amending my return. Excess contribution is showing less than amount contributed. How do I correct this?

I retired in 2023 and due to medicare 6 months lookback should have stopped contributions in 2022. I need to report the amount that was incorrectly contributed on in my 2022 taxes. This is greater that the excess contribution showing in turbo tax.  How can I do this?

You should let TurboTax calculate the excess, even if the excess it calculates seems wrong. One confusing point is that you can actually contribute to your HSA even while you have Medicare, because the limit is done on an annual basis. So if you had HDHP coverage for 6 months and Medicare for 6 months, you can contribute one-half of the annual HSA contribution limit, and TurboTax doesn't know (or care) which months you actually made these contributions in.

Does that describe your concern?
