Charitable Donation

In 2021, daughter left private school after only having completed 58 of 275 days.  Tuition was paid in full and we were not monetarily reimbursed for the unused 217 days of education.  Since there was no quid pro quo, can I consider the unreturned balance as a charitable contribution to the school.

If you can get documentation from the school showing that the amount you paid that was unused was considered a donation, then you can include it as a charitable donation.

The IRS requires documentation from the organization for any cash contributions over $250.

See the following TurboTax help article for more information:

Do I need a receipt for my donation?
