You can deduct the total cell phone costs proportionate to the business use. For example, if you used your cell phone 60% of the time for business, then you are able to claim 60% of those costs.
Once you find out about how much of the expense was for business use, you can use the steps below to enter it into the right spot on your return.
To enter your cell phone expense:
1. Select "Federal Taxes" at the top of the page
2. Select the "Deductions & Credits" sub-tab
3. Scroll down to "Employment Expenses" and select "Show More"
4. Select "Start/Revisit" next to "Job Expenses for W-2 Income"
5. Select "Edit" next to your occupation
6. Continue through the home office, vehicle, and asset expenses until you reach the screen titled "Job-Related Expenses" (towards the end)
7. Enter your cell phone as the description and the business use expense amount
