Can you get child tax credit if you take care of dependent children but can't work because you're disabled?

I am permanently disabled. I pay outrages property taxes and taxes on my social security. The government take my money in taxes but don't give me credit for taking care of my dependent children. What deductions are available to me to help with this?

No.  in order to claim the Child Tax Credit, you must have earned income of at least $2,500.  There are no other credits available if you do not have earned income.

If you are disabled and your only income is Social Security, you should not pay any taxes at all as your social security would not be taxable in that situation.

If you fall into the following, 85% of your social security is taxable income

  • Single with income above $34,000
  • Married Filing Jointly with income above $44,000
  • Married Filing Separate regardless of income

If you fall into the following, 50% of your social security is taxable income

  • Single with combined income between $25,000-$34,000
  • Married Filing Jointly with combined income between $32,000 and $44,000

Your combined income is calculated by adding your

  • AGI plus
  • Nontaxable Interest plus
  • 1/2 of your social security Benefits
