Can I deduct the cost of excise taxes on our vehicles in the state of Massachusetts?

Yes, the excise tax is the portion of your car registration that you can deduct, if you itemize.  You can find MA in the list of States with deductible fees and which portion you are allowed to claim linked here.   Follow these directions:

  1. With your return open, search for car registration inside your program.
  2. Select the Jump to link at the top of your search results.
  3. Answer Yes to Did you pay any car registration fees in 2023? and then enter them on the next screen.

You can’t deduct the total amount you paid, only the portion of the fee that’s based on your vehicle’s value.
