Can I deduct costs for a shower renovation after surgery to make it safe?

Yes, it is potentially deductible as a medical expense.  Medical expenses are deductible to the extent they exceed 7.5% of your AGI.  For example, if your AGI is $100,000 and you have medical expenses of $10,000, you can only deduct $2,500 as an itemized deduction on Schedule A.  You must also be itemizing your deductions as opposed to using the Standard Deduction.
