Will I get some type of payment this year if my son turns 18 in November?

They would be eligible for the Other Dependent tax credit of $500 if you claim him as a dependent on your 2021 tax return next year. He is not eligible for the Advance Child Tax Credit being disbursed by the IRS in 2021.

Why is that since he still lives at home and won't graduate until next year?

The Child Tax Credit is only for those children under the age of 17 in 2020 and under the age of 18 in 2021.
