Wife worked in two states, but I only worked in one

Hello,

My wife and I are still married. She only worked in Virginia till July, then moved to Ohio. I was a full time resident of Virginia for the entire year. On the Virginia State return Turbo Tax Deluxe wants me to fill out form 760PY. Not an issue, until you get down to section for "part-time resident"  I cannot enter a date because I didn't move. I cannot skip because will not advance. What do I do?

At this point, my advice would be to edit your personal information is your federal return in the MY INFO section of your return.

  1. After logging in to Turbo Tax, select the MY INFO tab in the left pane of your screen.
  2. In the Personal Summary Page, select edit next to your wife's name.
  3. As you edit the information, there will be a selection for you to make indicating that your wife's state of resident on 12/31 is Ohio, which you will select from a drop-down menu.
  4. Then you can make the selection that she was a Virginia resident previously and then indicate when she became a resident of Ohio.
  5. Now if this information is entered correctly, it should flow to your state returns when you start to prepare those returns.
  6. If you did all the above steps correctly, are you receiving an error message regarding your P/Y resident status or your wife?
  7. Also check your resident information in MY INFO, to indicate you are a full year resident of Va.

Wife worked in two states, but I only worked in one

Hello,

The issue is that the program understands I was a full-time resident of Virginia. However, on the 760 PY form, it requires me to enter date I moved. Well, it knows I didn't move and won't progress without date. I can't leave blank because errors hit every time. I can't give a date from 01/01 to 12/31 because it saying I moved, which is an untruth. Unreal, I can't believe only person seeing this issue.

The best alternative for you will be to file jointly on your Federal tax return, and separately for the states.  This can be a little tricky.   It would benefit you to get the Desktop CD version.

  1. Prepare one married filing jointly (MFJ) return to file with the IRS.
  2. Prepare a mock married filing separate (MFS) return for each taxpayer.
  3. Then for the first taxpayer, label and use the first mock MFS federal return to prepare their state MFS return.
