I changed my residency from Hawaii to Florida in January 2016, but I was still paying Hawaii taxes throughout 2016.

It depends.
If you just changed your residency but still worked in HI, then your income is HI-sourced and you will need to include the full amount of your HI-sourced income on a HI nonresident state income tax return. (FL has no state income taxes so no FL state tax return filing is required.)
If you moved on January 1st -
In order to get the full refund of your HI state income tax withholdings, you will need to file a nonresident HI return but report zero "0" income from HI. You must mail in this HI nonresident state income tax return and include your state W-2 information. You will want to include an explanatory statement with your HI return stating your situation (that your HI employer withheld HI taxes from your wages in error and that you are no longer a resident of HI).
If you moved after January 1st -
You will need to file a part-year resident returns for HI only. This will treat you as a resident of each state only for the days that you lived in that state so that you can avoid being double-taxed.
Divide your wages based on the time in each state and report your HI allocation separately on your part-year resident state income tax return.
