I bought the 2019 with state filing included.  I wasn’t able to submit my returns until I paid another $24.99 for my state filing. Why is this?  So now I paid double for state filing. Can anyone tell me why....

Desktop software includes the software to PREPARE a state return.  E-filing that state return is an extra charge--as noted on the packaging.  You can avoid the e-file fee if you print, sign and mail the state return instead of e-filing it.

If I can use TurboTax for free to do my federal, why should I even bother to buy the program using the carrot that the state filing is free?  So you are saying that it costs nothing to get the state loaded, but it costs me $25 to file unless I print and mail it in?  Seriously?  What is the advantage then of buying the program?

If you qualify to file free, you're correct, you don't have to buy TurboTax. However, if you don't qualify to file free, the advantage is that you get to prepare your state return.
