Paying Oregon state tax as a Nevada resident.

I just started a new w-2 job as a traveling field technician. I am a permanent resident of Nevada. I received my payroll check and it’s listed I paid Oregon State income tax. Why am I subjected to pay their  state tax? Do I address this with my employer? perhaps there has been a mistake? If it’s not a mistake, how do I recoup any state tax I paid to Oregon? My work is performed on the road in different states.

As long as your employer has you down as living in NV, they should only be withholding taxes for the income you earned when you were physically working in OR.  Thus they may be withholding some OR taxes for any times you worked in OR...but their withholding should not be for your total wages.  AND Yes, you would be required to file a non-resident tax return, and pay OR taxes for just that OR portion of your wages.

Of course, you won't really know if they are withholding OR taxes properly until you get your W-2 form from that employer....BUT, it would be a goood idea to talk to that employer/HR/Payroll NOW to see if they are doing it properly.

ALSO, for the work you physically perform in any other states, they should be withholding taxes for any of those states that have an income tax too....but just for the wages earned by physically working there....and you may thus be required to file non-resident tax returns for those states too.

BUT AGAIN, it would be a really goooood idea to talk to that employer/HR/Payroll NOW to see how they are handling your wages, relative to the states you physically work in.
