If you have solar expenditures, enter them on the federal return and TurboTax will transfer those amounts to your NYS return.   So, 2 steps:

  1. Enter the expenses on the federal return and then
  2. Go through the state return and make sure you go through the solar credit for NYS.   TurboTax will follow state law on your NYS return and federal law for your federal return, so you don't need to know what is different between the 2 credits.

You can enter them in the Deductions & Credits section:

  1. Open or continue your return, if you don't already have it open.
  2. In TurboTax, search for energy improvements (Don't search for energy credit as this will take you to the wrong place.)
  3. Click the Jump to link in the search results.
  4. At the bottom of the Energy-Saving Home Improvements screen, answer Yes and continue. Follow the instructions.
