Not enough zeros on KW2 form

When finishing my state taxes ( Kentucky) it says that my State ID has to be 9 digits even though on my federal W2 it is only 6. Do I need to add the 3 zeros to the front of my State ID number because I’ve never had to do this before.

Yes, you can add leading zeros before your state ID number.

Kentucky state employer identification numbers for income tax withholding (Withholding Tax Account Number) generally consist of 6 or 9 digits (e.g., 999999 or 999999999). For electronic filing, it is often represented as a 9-digit string. Some unemployment accounts (KEIN) may appear as 9 digits, occasionally with a letter (e.g., 12 123456A 1).

The KY ID in box 15 where it states State employer ID is typically 6 digits for KY.  But, there are KY companies that only print out five digits on the W-2.  Check to see if your entry is 5 digits instead of 6.  If on the W-2 you only see five digits, then add a zero in front of the number in TurboTax.  KY will recognize the number, and you'll get through the TT diagnostic

See here for more filing tips from the State of Kentucky.

Different states have different criteria for employer ID numbers, and some accept more than one format. Check with your employer or your state's Department of Revenue if you are uncertain whether your W-2 has the correct format.

I always have to add one zero to the state ID because it only has 5 digits. Now it is saying there was a problem and I need 9 digits. I just didn’t want to mess it up. If I just used the 6 digits that I always have will it be accepted?

If you received a prompt in the final review in TurboTax to use 9 digits this year, then you can add 3 zeros instead of one.
