Incorrectly Filed A State Tax Return

Hey All,

I'm in need of help on how to proceed. This is the first year I've worked fully remote for a company out of state ( I live in NH). I thought because the company was out of California, I'd need to do a California state tax return and that's what I did. I filed it already and owed approximately $1000. After a lot of research, I found out I didn't need to file a CA state tax return because all of my work was remote and performed in NH. They're due to take out the money on Feb 15 and I'm not sure how to proceed on how to get that money back and fix that CA tax return.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Jordan

You can Amend the California return down to $0.  You cannot Amend yet though because the original has to completely process, as to avoid confusion, then you can amend.  When you amend, you should receive a refund of the $1,000.00.

TurboTax allows you to amend Free.  However, if you only need to make specific changes to your state return, select your product below and follow the instructions.

Processing times for amended state returns vary from state to state. If it's been more than 12 weeks since you filed your amended state return and you haven't heard anything, we suggest you contact your state tax agency.

@Cynthiad66 's answer is correct, if you're a W-2 employee of the California company.  But if you're an independent contractor with CA-based clients, then your income would be taxable by CA.  (An independent contractor receives a 1099-NEC instead of a W-2.)
