If my wife and i file jointly with only ss as income, paid no taxes on it, had deductions of 23K, could we owe nothing?

We have a combined ss income of over $45K, paid no taxes on it, have itemized deductions of over $23K, and we were 69 in 2016 and both retired.  Our turbotax showed $0 due for federal and state. Can that be correct?

If the Social Security benefits you each received is the only income being reported on your tax return, then you would have no taxes owed or a tax refund.  There would be no benefit or need to file a tax return.
