Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I work in MD and became a DC resident in November 2021. Turbotax is showing me I owe MD taxes, but nothing for DC. Do I need to file a separate DC tax return?

My employer has not changed in the taxable year and is still in Maryland. I moved to DC and only live there. Thanks so much in advance.

Yes. If you moved to D.C., you would be a part-year resident of Maryland until November and then a D.C. resident for the rest of the year.

You need to file two part-year returns.

  1. Tap My Info in the left column
  2. Edit next to you name
  3. On Tell us the states(s) you lived in, D.C. should be your state of residence on December 31
  4. Select Yes I lived in another state in 2021
  5. Maryland should be the Previous state of residence, with the date you became a resident of D.C.

This should create a part-year D.C. return. If it doesn’t:

  1. Tap State in the left column
  2. Select Your State Returns at the top
  3. On Status of Your state returns, tap Add another State and choose D.C.

If your employer is not withholding D.C. tax fill out a D.C. withholding certificate.
