I retired in June 2024 in California. I moved to Idaho in July 2024. Which state is my residency?

Your residency for tax purposes in 2024 will be split between California and Idaho. Here's how it works:

California Residency (January - June 2024): You were a resident of California until you moved in July 2024. Therefore, you will file a part-year resident return for California, reporting income earned while you were a resident

Idaho Residency (July - December 2024): After moving to Idaho in July 2024, you became a resident of Idaho. You will file a part-year resident return for Idaho, reporting income earned while you were a resident

Steps to File in TurboTax:

  • TurboTax handles part-year returns, but you need to make sure you've set up your personal information correctly for us to do so. We'll ask about where you lived in 2024 when you set up your personal information.
  • If you need to add this information after you've begun your return, using TurboTax Online:
  1. Go to the Personal profile screen.
  2. Under Your info, select your Name and select Edit.
  3. Continue to the Let's check for some other situations screen.
  4. On the line for I lived in another state:
    • Check the box.
    • Select your previous state of residence.
    • Enter the date you became a resident of your new state.
  5. If the rest of your information is accurate, select Continue.
  6. After you finish entering your federal return info, you'll automatically move to the State Taxes section, where you'll see your part-year states listed.
  7.  We suggest you prepare the return for your former state first, followed by the return for the state you currently live in.

Important: If you also see a nonresident state return in the State taxes section, complete that return before you work on your part-year return(s) to ensure your tax credits are calculated correctly.
