I made 5,000 in MA (resident) and 800 in NY(non-resident), why is NY taxing me on the 5,000 amount not the 800? The money was correctly allocated earlier in the form.

I go to school in New York and work on campus during the time I am there, I made $800 in New York in 2023. While I made $5,000 in Massachusetts in the summer of 2023. When I got to the final page of my state taxes for New York it said I would be taxed on the $5,000 amount not the $800.

Are you filing a non resident NY return? Do you owe taxes?  NY starts with the federal amount and then makes changes, so sometimes it does appear as though you are being taxed on the entire amount. Look at line 31 under NY state amount.  If you see $800 or less than this is accurate.  If you see more then walk back through the questions to double check your allocations.
