This is an automatic amount given to each person to reduce your taxable income. While there are no longer personal exemptions on the Federal level, many states still allow for personal exemptions. It's a good thing!

Can someone help! I’m confused on how I owe $2 in federal taxes even tho I’m non exempt and all my taxes get taken out automatically from my paycheck every pay period?
