I lived in California Jan - Aug this year, and I've entered that information as best I can. It's making me submit my CA return as a "nonresident" rather than part-time.

Additionally, when I review my residency information, I see that the question "Were you a California nonresident during all of 2020?" has been set to "Yes" even though I've answered "No".

I lived in California Jan - Aug this year, and I've entered that information as best I can. It's making me submit my CA return as a "nonresident" rather than part-time.

I recommend reviewing your input as follows to ensure the return is populated correctly.

Be aware, part-year residents and non-residents use the same 540-NR form.  Therefore, on the summary screen titled Status of your state returns, will still reflect the return as being a nonresident return even though you are filing as a part-year resident.

You will need to go through your state interview section again and make your corrections there.

  1. Select State in the black panel on the left hand side of your screen when logged into TurboTax.
  2. This will take you to a screen titled Let's get your state taxes done right.  Click continue on this screen.
  3. You will see the following screen titled Status of your state returns.  Select Edit to the right of California.

Edit state

As you continue, on the page titled Your 2020 California taxes are ready for us to check, select Edit to the right of General info.

Continue through the screens until you see Residency Information During 2020 and review your input to the questions.  You will need to confirm your entries on this screen and any subsequent screens to ensure your return populates with the part-year residency dates.

Thank you, I hadn't realized it's the same form.

While reviewing my information, I do see that it's saved that I have my California residency dates from (start) to September 2020, so I think the information is contained correctly. Thanks again!
