How do I keep TurboTax from applying my Fed Capital Loss Carryforward to my AZ state return? AZ does not allow this if loss is from living in another state.

I incurred a capital loss in another state before I moved to AZ.  AZ does not permit the taxpayer to use a capital loss carryover incurred from non-Arizona sources while the taxpayer was an AZ nonresident.  So you lose the whole carryover for state tax purposes.  (See AZ ITR 13-6.)

But TurboTax doesn't seem to know about this rule.  My only option appears to be to override all the relevant fields on AZ-140 and on the Worksheet for Net Long-Term Capital Gain Subtraction for Assets Acquired After December 31, 2011.  That's tedious and error-prone.  Ideas?

AZ does not permit the taxpayer to use a capital loss carryover incurred from non-Arizona sources while the taxpayer was an AZ nonresident. The whole carryover for AZ state tax purposes is lost.  Turbo Tax handles this required adjustment in the program.

TurboTax allows for this rule in the AZ interview. Go over AZ again and look for the Any Adjustments screen. There is a check box on the third line down on the list which states, "Deducted from federal income a Non-Arizona capital loss carry-forward that was incurred while a nonresident of AZ".

Checking this box will bring up a screen which allows you to enter the amount of the loss. This will adjust the non-AZ capital loss carry-forward to be removed from the AZ return.

Thanks, TurboTaxGinnyF.  I don't use the EasyStep Interview.  It's too slow/cumbersome for my situation which is somewhat complicated.  I was hoping there was a way to do it using Forms (without using Override).

I had no problem completing the return using Override, it's just not the best way to handle things.  I will experiment with using EasyStep to fix that one item.  I tried it quickly but it botched up some other parts of my return.  (As I said, I find it cumbersome.)
