This is not uncommon, but you can check certain things to try to figure out why.
- Go back into your return and double check your posting of your W-2. Focus on BOXES 16 thru 20 to ensure they are correct.
- Check your year to year comparison for anything that looks inconsistent.
- Did you have multiple incomes this year, or a retirement distribution that did not have enough state tax withheld.
- Has anything else changed on your income.
- Have there been any changes to your state's tax laws
