Filing State Taxes

I'm working on my taxes and under personal information I have married filing jointly.  However, now that I'm working on the State portion it's saying "Since your filing married filing separately on this combined return, enter my portion".  Why is it saying this and how do I change it to jointly?

Each state has different filing requirements if you and your spouse are not residents of the same state or had different periods of residency.  If you post which state, someone can check this for you.

Iowa has multiple filing status- go back to the start of the Iowa return and look for the screen below.  Here you must check the box "I need to change or verify my Iowa filing status (Select if married filing joint on federal)

If married taxpayers file a joint return

Both spouses are jointly and severally liable for the total tax due on the return, except when one spouse is considered to be an innocent spouse under criteria established pursuant to section 6015 of the Internal Revenue Code.
