Do I need to file a STATE for ALABAMA?

I live in CA, but I had a property (vacant lot) I sold in Alabama for a loss. Do I still need to file an Alabama return as well as CA?

No, since you have zero AL income.

Nonresidents must file a return if their Alabama income exceeds the allowable prorated personal exemption.
