You can efile an NY extension through TurboTax by first logging into your account and then click the link below.
New York (NY)
New York extensions can now be filed
through TurboTax. (
log into online account first and then click link). The extension gives you until October 15, 2019 to file your New York return.
If you owe additional New York taxes, you'll also need to submit payment by April 15, 2019 to avoid penalties. You can submit payment with your online extension, pay by check, or pay by credit card.

Or, if you are using the desktop software, you can also use the desktop software to prepare an extension, but you will have to have the NY return started. Go to NY state return and edit -> when you get to the Summary screen that shows all of the options (i.e General Info, Income Allocation, Changes to Federal Income) stop when you get to Other Forms and Voluntary Contributions - click Other Forms -> Select Request Extension of Time to File (Form IT -370) - you will need to print and mail the form
