My son is a full time college student in Indiana. He lives in TX when not in school. He received 3 W-2's last year: 2 from jobs in TX, and 1 from his school job in IN. His total income was less than $5000. He will be filing federal taxes to get his federal income tax returned to him (some of it was withheld). He is filing as Single, and is a dependent on our taxes.
His IN W-2 withheld $60 in State, and $18 in local taxes.
Can he get the Indiana state and/or local taxes refunded to him as well? Does he need to file IN state taxes? (his income was about $1900 on this W-2).

He may be eligible for a refund. My suggestion would be to use the online version of TurboTax to prepare the return. If there is a refund from Indiana greater than the cost of filing, then file the return. If there is no refund or the refund is less than the filing fee, he is under the threshold that requires him to file a return for Indiana so you can then delete the state return and incur no cost.
Since the state products use the data entered on the federal return with just a few additional questions (typically) it shouldn't be a significant investment of time to see if it is worth filing!
