California state tax 540 doesn't recognize state tax withholding on federal form

California state tax 540 doesn't recognize state tax withholding on federal form

Changed values for fed withholding and turbo tax adjusts refund. Changing value for state tax withheld does nothing. Line 71 on California 540 is always blank yielding LARGE tax due. Two calls to tech support yielded the following response: wait a couple of weeks and try again. The income section was just released Jan 10.

FWIW, this is a BUG.

Make sure you picked the right state on the W2 box 15 .  Actually completely delete the W2 and re enter it MANUALLY.  That usually fixes it.   Then click on the state tab and go though state again to  update.

Are you using the Online version or the Desktop program?  I have the Desktop Home & Business program and entered a W2 with CA withholding and it shows up on 540 line 71.  Have you updated the program?  Go up to Online-Check for Updates.  Even if you already updated, then update again.  There have been several updates  yesterday and today.

The state withholding won't update unless you click on the State tab and go though state again.

Thanks for your input. I’m using the desktop version Windows 11. I’ve been through the entire California program twice. No change.

All of my income is from Retirement 1099-R and interest 1099-int. I’ve experimented with putting in ridiculous amounts for state withholding with no change in the state tax due. Fed stuff updates immediately. I’ve got the most recent version to my knowledge. There was a California update as well as program updates when I opened Turbo Tax. I assume everything is current. I went through two tech experts who told me to wait for the next update because they had no idea why it didn’t work. I can trick the 540 by overriding the amount on line 71, but I thought I saw some warning about CA not accepting this if the was some fed mismatch. I don’t have to do any of this for a while and I don’t yet have official 1099s (just close estimates). I’m convinced it’s a bug.  I had an issue with the CA connection a couple of years ago and actually had to file CA by hand because Turbo Tax never fixed the glitch. I wrote software for 45 years and I have very good records, so I’m not a rookie.

Ok I entered a 1099R with CA withholding and it showed up on my 540 line 71.  As I said for W2,   delete the 1099R and enter it again Manually.   Are you just watching the meter at the top or on the actual 540 form?  Make sure to fill out all 4 boxes for the State Information at the bottom of the 1099R entry screen.  Check the State ID for box 15.

I deleted 1099-R and reentered. Nothing changed. Line 71 in CA 540 still blank. I completely went through  CA state tax steps. Just doesn't recognize any state tax withholding. The plan is to wait for a couple of weeks when I get all official 1099s and then try again. Seriously looking at another tax program for next year. Been using TT for at least 30 years, but two glitches in the past three years has soured me somewhat.
