NC State Taxes

Hello, I am a college student studying in North Carolina. I earned about $7k at a summer internship in 2022 on which I paid $250 in NC state taxes. Are these NC state taxes refundable?

Separately, I earned another $15k in my home state of New Jersey on which I paid the necessary taxes.

Are the NC state taxes refundable or were they correctly deducted on my W2?

Thanks.

As a NC nonresident, your income is below the filing requirement shown on page 6 of the instructions. If you file a NC return, you will have a refund of the amounts withheld.

As a NJ resident, all income is taxable to NJ. Your income is above the threshold and you should have some tax liability. See NJ instructions. This could be a refund or amount due depending on the amount withheld.

You will note from @AmyC 's cited reference that the NC filing requirements are based on the taxpayer's Federal Adjusted Gross Income.

The 2022 NC filing threshold for a Single Taxpayer is federal AGI of $12,750.
