The program automatically checks Schedule 1,  Line 22 Box D in error on my return.  How do I correct this?

The 2020 Michigan Schedule 1, Line 22 Box D is a checkbox for having received benefits from SSA exempt employment. Check how you initially entered the retirement income to explain why the SSA Tax Exempt was selected for Michigan.

To return to this area, follow these steps:

    • From the left menu, select Federal.
    • This will open the Wages & Income page. Scroll down to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) and Edit.
    • Check what kind of 1099-R was selected.
      • If you do need CSA 1099-R or CSF 1099-R, then you would need to check the box SSA Tax Exempt for Michigan, and should not remove the checkbox check.
      • If you do not need the SSA Tax Exempt check box for Michigan, then you do not need CSA 1099-R or CSF 1099-R.
        • The tile for Financial institution or other provider (1099-R) needs to be selected instead.
      • Only changing this tile could lead to different errors in the Michigan return.
        • Therefore, if you need Form 1099-R, and not CSA 1099-R or CSF 1099-R, delete your existing 1099-R entry and re-enter it.
          • To delete this, follow these steps:
            • From the left menu, select Tax Tools.
            • Select Tools.
            • Scroll to Delete a Form.
            • Scroll to Form 1099-R and select Delete and Delete Selected Form and Continue.
          • To Re-enter:
            • Select Federal from the left menu to open Wages & Income.
            • Scroll to Retirement Plans and Social Security and Show More.
            • IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) and Start.
              • Select the category of Form 1099-R according to what you received.

For more information from the State of Michigan:

Summarized from 2020 Michigan Schedule 1 Instructions: SSA exempt employment means the worker did not pay Social Security taxes. Some examples include police and firefighter retirees, some federal retirees covered under the Civil Service Retirement System and hired prior to 10984, and a small number of other state and local government retirees. Schedule 1, Line 22, Box D is under the category of the filer not the spouse.  Box H is for the spouse.  This did not resolve the issue.

The 2020 Michigan Schedule 1, Line 22, boxes A-H, are based on your input in your return. Box D, specifically, is dependent on your year of birth (if you were born after 1952) and if you are retired.

If this box is being checked, and it should not be, then most likely, a question in the Michigan return about being retired was asked incorrectly.

Please follow these steps to change your retirement status in your Michigan return:

    1. Open your return.
    2. Click on State.
    3. Click on Edit for your Michigan return.
    4. Click Edit next to the Income section.
    5. Click Edit next to the Social Security (SSA) input.
    6. Click Yes on the page Do you want to change your entries?
    7. Answer No for the question Did you retire as of January 1, 2013?

I have attached a picture below for additional guidance.
